TOHO STUDIOS aims to introduce
"24/7 Carbon-Free Electricity"
TOHO STUDIOS aims to decarbonize 100% of all electricity used in its studios
by introducing electricity generated from solar and hydrogen which does not emit CO2, gradually from 2024,
with the aim of achieving "24/7 carbon-free electricity" (Note 1).
Note 1) "24/7 carbon-free electricity" is an electricity which does not emit CO2 all year round.
In accordance with the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry's "Guidelines for Electricity Retail Sales“, “24/7 carbon-free electricity” means that 100% of the electricity demand will be supplied from zero-CO2 emission sources, and environmental value will also be provided through the use of non-fossil fuel certificates.
Before:Traditional electricity use
Traditionally, fossil fuels such as coal, petroleum, and liquefied natural gas (LNG), which emit large amounts of CO2, have accounted for approximately 70% (Note 2) of electricity generation.
After:Carbon-free electricity use
Starting in FY 2024, TOHO STUDIOS will gradually introduce hydrogen and solar power generation, and will aim to realize "24/7 carbon-free electricity" ultimately.
(Note 2) See "Aggregate or Estimated Results (Comprehensive Energy Statistics), Time Series Table”, by the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy.
(Note 3) This image is based on the assumption that true carbon-free status is achieved in FY 2030. Figures are not guaranteed.

In line with TOHO STUDIOS' commitment to 24/7 carbon-free electricity, we ask for our tenants’ and studio users’ understanding and cooperation.

Filming schedule will not be affected in any way

Please rest assured that the introduction of 24/7 carbon-free electricity to TOHO STUDIOS will not affect filming schedules or operations.

Pricing changes

Changes in electricity prices will be applied starting in the 2024 billing year. A TOHO STUDIOS representative will provide you with specific pricing information on an individual basis.

Characteristics of 24/7 Carbon-Free Electricity at TOHO STUDIOS
Three key points toward full decarbonization of the electricity we use
POINT 1
First use case of 24/7 carbon-free electricity in Japan

Initiatives by other companies

CO2 is emitted by fossil fuel-derived electricity during morning and evening hours when solar assets are not operating. So even if emissions are offset through non-fossil certificates, in some cases, CO2 emissions are not truly being reduced.

TOHO STUDIOS' goal (24/7 carbon-free electricity)

We aim to eliminate CO2 emissions by tracking various power sources used on an hourly basis and actively utilize power sources that are not affected by the weather or time of day, such as hydrogen, to compensate for the instability of solar power generation.

POINT 2
Development of TOHO STUDIOS-exclusive hydrogen power generation
A new hydrogen power generation system has been installed at JERA's Sodegaura Power Plant (power generation capacity: 3,600MW / site area: approx. 1.12 million m2).

POINT 3
For realizing sustainable video/film production using 24/7 carbon-free electricity compliant with international standard Energy Tag (Note 5)
Carbon-free electricity is used in shooting and production.

Entertainment content produced at TOHO STUDIOS through eco-friendly and sustainable practices can be enjoyed by consumers in theaters and through streaming platforms.

Commercials produced in a sustainable environment will enhance clients’ brand image.

(Note 5) Energy Tag-compliant 24/7 carbon-free electricity will be supplied by JERA, an electric utility and member of the UN 24/7 Carbon Free Energy Compact, an international initiative led by the United Nations and Energy Tag, which creates and advocates international standards for 24/7 CFE.
